Description
1822 1ed Alice Wonderland Influence RARE World Upside Down Porta Salviati ART
Giuseppe Porta was a 16th-century Italian painter whose artwork is beautifully represented in this 1822 work ‘Il Mondo Rovesciato’ or ‘The World Turned Upside Down’. English engraver F.C. Lewis published 28 plates of the artwork of Porta (also known as Salviati) which were originally produced in 1564.
These illustrations were known to heavily influence the writing of Lewis Carroll’s famous ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Porta’s designs depicted what is commonly known as ‘inversion’ or the ‘upside-down’ – displays that go against expectations or common understanding. According to Ronald Reichertz, in his book ‘Making of the Alice Books’,
“the emphasis (of Salviati’s art) is on the bizarre world produced by inversion.”
This 1822 first edition includes all 28 expected engravings, including the famous map of Africa and Europe exchanged in location.
