19th Cent Victor Paillard & Romain Ormolu Clock.
French 19th Louis XVI style ormolu clock by Victor Paillard and Romain. The clock is raised on rectangular feet below an oval ormolu base decorated with a central female mask among beaded borders, rosettes and finely chased foliate scrolls. The enamel dial is encased in a beveled glass case with beaded border and a very impressive sunburst pendulum.The dial indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals, with two bronze hands and is marked "Paillard & Romain fants de Bronzes PARIS"". At each side is a superb winged cherub joined by a draped laurel garland. At the top is a lidded urn with medallion amidst floral garlands and central bow. The clock is stamped on the movement and on the base. All original gilt.
Victor Paillard (1805-1886) a renowned bronzier, initially specializing in producing small objects including candelabra and statuettes and exhibited at the Fine Arts & Industry exhibition in 1839. Paillard exhibited at many of the International exhibitions held during the 19th century including the London great exhibition of 1851, where his fine technique was greatly admired.
