Items from legendary FBI Agent and WWII Army Colonel Melvin Purvis. In the 1930's he was the famous FBI agent that brought down John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson. He was portrayed by Christian Bale in the movie "Public Enemies." In 1937, Herman Goering learned that Purvis was on a trip to Berlin, invited him wild boar hunting, and he was regaled with stories of American Gangsters. Purvis entered the Army in 1942 and quickly rose to the rank of Colonel and Deputy Provost Marshal in the North African Theater. He was the lead investigator of, and subsequently interviewed General Patton for his two slapping incidents. At the end of the war, he was the Chief American Investigator for German War Crimes, tracked down Nazi War Criminals, interrogated Herman Goering once captured, and was instrumental in the Nuremberg Trials. A signed card granting him access to the Palace of Justice at Nuremberg in August 1945 by authority of the United States Chief Counsel for the Prosecution of Axis Criminals. Also a personal lighter of his engraved and acquired in North Africa dated 1944.
