Portrait of fellow artist Richard Hackett from 1946 in pencil from his sketch book by one of the Bay Areas leading artists of the Abstract Expression Movement, Hassel Smith (1915-2007) Smith has a very long bio, an interesting read. Went to and taught at California School of Fine, worked with Douglas MacAgy, Clifford Still, David Park, Elmer Bischoff, Richard Diebenkorn and Frank Lobdell. His work was shown by Walter Hopps at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in the late fifties and early sixties which influenced the painters in Southern California during this period. He had a major retrospectives at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1975 and the Oakland Museum in 1981. Frame size 14.5" x 18", image size 5.75" x 8.5".
