Item Details

Description

19th century Japanese bamboo wrist rest used by painters and calligraphers, carved with a scholarly landscape depicting a flock of geese in flight over a scholar’s hut among rocks under bare trees and high mountains in the distance. 4-character inscription in the upper part, most probably describing the scene (3rd character is YAMA for a mountain). Beautiful subtle piece, wonderful quality carving, rich warm patina, in excellent condition. Signed GYOKUSEN TO (carved by Gyokusen) above a pine tree on the left. Wonderful piece for scholar’s desk, recently deaccessioned from the Framingham History Center, MA, where it has been part of the collection since 1923. Length 6 3/8 inches, width 1 15/16 inches.
