Description
A Chinese Jian Hare’s Fur Tea Bowl in Wooden Box – Song Dynasty or Later. Coated in a thick black glaze with persimmon “hare’s fur” effect glaze to the upper body. The glaze sagging and stopping short of the unglazed square-cut foot. The bowl comes in an old Japanese wooden box complete with a shifuku (cloth bag).There is minor surface wear to the glaze; no repair or restoration. Diameter 13cm. Song Dynasty (AD 960 – 1279) or later.
For reference: similar examples are illustrated and described in the 1996 book “Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, Partridge Feathers, Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400 – 1400”.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton.
