Item Details
Description
Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "Trading Schooner Equator" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board.

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.

This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 46c Trading Schooner Equator stamp issued September 25, 1995.

Though little historical information about the trading schooner Equator remains, the vessel was mentioned by Robert Louis Stevenson in his 1896 novel In the South Seas. Due to its small size -- just over 66 feet long with a displacement of 72 tons -- Stevenson referred to the Equator as a "pygmy" schooner. Though the craft was built as a sailing vessel, she was later converted to steam power. Today, the Equator is owned by the city of Everett, Washington. Though she spent her last years of duty as a steam tug, plans to restore the Equator to her original glory have recently been discussed.
