Description
16th - 17th c. Carved and Polychrome Decorated Figure of the Buddha, in bai and camphorwood with polychrome lacquer and gilding, with hands gesturing protection, the Buddha is depicted cross-legged and wearing a crown, 18 3/4" high, 12 1/4" x 9 1/4. Finger losses, crown and toe chip, paint losses, shrinkage cracks and surface wear; 18th and 19th c. embellishments to portions of the head, ornament and sash.Exhibited at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, 1996; Rice University Art Museum, Houston/Menil Celebration, 1995 & 1997-8; and Virginia Commonwealth University Museum, 1998. Provenance: Collections of William Walker & descendants, and the Walker Foundation.
