Description
Millard Fillmore Twice Signed + Dedicated to His Wife, "Inner Rome", 1866, From His Personal Library
"Inner Rome", J.B. Lippincott & Co, Philadelphia, 1866. Signed twice by President Millard Fillmore. Once within the dedication to his wife on the front paste down "Presented to / Mrs. Millard Fillmore / By her husband / March 11th 1867", and again when Millard Fillmore signed his wife's name on the title page, as "Mrs. Millard Fillmore, March 11, 1867". Near fine condition.
This book came from the Fillmore's personal library. President Fillmore, always the ardent book collector and reader since childhood, often presented Caroline with books, in addition to carefully cataloging both her and his collection. As is evidenced here he would sign her name on her behalf as establishing ownership and then catalogue her books. This book was signed by President Fillmore for Caroline. Having researched and reviewed other scarce books owned by President Fillmore we find that there is most often a catalogue number identifier on the title page found at the top, and another number along the bottom. This set was deaccessioned from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical library, the public library of which was co-founded by the Fillmores, and has the expected library sticker on the spine.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
