Description
Circa 23rd-20th century BC. A bronze discoid seal with compartmented and openwork design comprising: two addorsed crescents with heart-shaped leaf to each end, curving to meet the edge, scalloped border to the rim, accompanied by a typed and signed note by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 58 x 59 x 21mm. This is round with scalloped outer edge, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of two central crescents tête bêche, the tips of each ending in leaf-shapes and between each pair of these leaf-shapes a crescent shaped strut is mounted joining the outer rim, which is plain save for the scallops. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design, and well preserved save for a little denting of the outer rim. The metal is sound, and conserved.' 50 grams, 59mm (2 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection number Y-44, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
