Description
Pencil signed 19 1/2 x 14 1/2 in. (sight), 20 x 20 in. (framed). Russian-American genre scene painter, Isaac Soyer, specialized in portraits, interiors and dancers. He was born 1902 in Tombrov, Russia and along with his family emigrated to the United States in 1912.Isaac had two older twin brothers, Raphael Soyer, 18991987 and Moses Soyer, 18991974 (b. Borisoglebsk), who were also artists. They settled in New York City, inspired by everyday attitudes, thoughts, and gestures of people doing everyday tasks. As a WPA artist, Isaac's "Employment Agency" (Whitney Mus., New York City) reveals the social realities of the Depression years. The Soyers' depiction of individuals and their environment place them in the category of American realism.During World War II he worked at Bell Aircraft Corporation in Buffalo, New York. He was an instructor at the Albright Art School, Buffalo, New York, 1941-44; Buffalo Art Institute and Niagara Falls Art School, 1940s; Education Alliance Art School, New York, 1950-; New School Social Research, 1968-; Art Students' League, New York, 1969.Source:The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition.2001.
