Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A charming, hand-carved wooden sculpture of a llama or alpaca, shown here kneeling down as if resting on the ground. The head is raised along the long neck, with small, perky ears and deep holes drilled for eyes that may have once had inlays. The figure is hollow, with a small hole drilled in the center of the body above one leg. It may have been used to hold sacred llama fat used in ceremonial rituals. The figure is carved from a found piece of wood, as the underside of the figure shows with the natural grain very vivid. Size: 4.95" W x 2.9" H (12.6 cm x 7.4 cm); 3.45" H (8.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s

Rich, smooth patina. Wood has light weathering commensurate with age but is generally well preserved, especially for its age and material.
