Description

Very unusual 1900-1920s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese ceramic Oribe ware scroll weight in a form of a tidal rock painted with a crab crawling to reach a seaweed jalf covering the rock. Veryclever design, characteristic Oribe green and brown colors. Oribe ware (named after Furuta Oribe - a famous 16th century tea master) was produced in Mino and Seto kilns: it is particularly Japanese in taste and was never made for export. Wonderful patina, pleasantly heavy, inscribed mark of the potter on the bottom, powerful and subtle piece for scholars table. Length 3 1/2 inches.
