USA, Midwestern USA, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fantastic tool from the pioneer period of American history, this is a tall wooden post pump, probably made by E. W. Walker's Factory in Goshen, Indiana - a popular source for this type of pump that sold them throughout Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, and Kentucky. Wooden pumps like this one were replaced by metal ones early in the 20th century. Post pumps were made from logs, squared off, and with an auger bore through its center. Near the top of the post is a pump handle and a cast iron spigot. A water pump like this would have been lowered from above into a well and hooked into a ring on the side of the well; then it would have been lifted out when the pumping was done and stored. This example is painted bright green and has writing on one side, now too faded to be read, that named the manufacturer. Size: 13" L x 5.75" W x 88.5" H (33 cm x 14.6 cm x 224.8 cm)

Intact, with expected wear from use. The cast iron parts have a dull red patina but are in very nice condition. Paint is faded and worn in some places but still in good condition.
