Item Details

Description

North America, Southwestern United States, probably New Mexico, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A fine fire-starting kit known as a chuckmuck with a folded iron front flap adorned with several brass studs surrounding a radiating sun as well as a steel striker hanging from the bottom. The interior cavity is thin enough to fit a striking flint and other smaller tools if desired, and the top loop is strung with a red-dyed leather strand. Size: 3.8" L x 2" W (9.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired in 2018; ex-John Anderson collection, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
