Description
Raynaud, Theophile (1583-1663) O Parascevasticum, Septidvanis Antiphonis Maioribus Natale Christi Antecurrentibus Praefixum. Quarto, a4, A-Z4, Aa-Ii4, Kk2; ex libris Abbé Abraham Girard (1635-1693), head abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Chalivoy near Bourges ca. 1651-1663, with his signature on title page and bound in full contemporary French sprinkled sheepskin with gilt-tooled spine incorporating Girard's initials, very good, 9 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. - Lyon: Fourmy, 1661.
First edition, well-preserved copy of Raynaud's treatise on O, enamored as he was of his single-letter subject. From a Christian standpoint, O starts countless a psalm, of course, but O is so much more than that. It's every part of speech, it's a zero and so nothingness, it's a mouth, a circle, the globe, a halo, an egg. Raynaud elaborates. OCLC shows five copies worldwide.
