Description
CARUSO, ENRICO. Ink drawing, Signed, full-length abstract portrait of Alfred Hertz, showing him from behind, wearing a tailcoat with the edge of a podium just visible above his head, presumably while conducting. Signed at lower right, with a holograph caption at lower right ("Hertz"). 11x8¼ inches; ink border drawn in unknown hand, moderate even toning. - Np, nd
In addition to drawing caricatures for friends and admirers, Caruso drew many for publication in La Follia di New York, an Italian-language newspaper published by his friend, Marziale Sisca. Caruso's drawings intended for publication often include faint pencil or blue pencil sketch lines below the inked line, as well as editor's notes and ink stamps in margins and on versos. Many of these caricatures were anthologized in The New Book of Caricatures by Enrico Caruso (New York: La Follia di New York, 1965); the drawing in the present lot appears in this book.
