Description
SHE HAS LIED TOO MUCH . . . . IT'S OVER, AND I WILL BE AS HARD AS A ROCK" CARUSO, ENRICO. Autograph Letter Signed, "Caruso," to Sybil Seligman ("Cara Signora"), in Italian, thanking for her friendship, explaining that "she" is regretful [Ada Giachetti, his partner with whom he has four children, who ran away with Caruso's driver in May], but expressing his resolve not to renew the relationship, mentioning daily study for New York performances, and giving travel dates for his tour of Germany and America in October. 2 pages, 4to, "Hotel Cecil" stationery, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet; minor loss to text at folds. - London, 10 August 1908
". . . Thanks a thousand times because your words do me so much good and I am proud to have in you an affectionate and sincere friend.
"We are beginning the painful notes, on the other hand, because from information received it is clear that she is sad and depressed. Forgiveness, I'm sure, she will never ask of me, but even if this should come to pass, I will never believe her again because she has lied too much . . . . It's over, and I will be as hard as a rock. The box ["scatola": his larynx] is well, because every day I open it to study a new opera I should sing in New York. . . .
