"The Payne Popeye". A remarkable 4" Porphyry Popeyed Birdstone. Well proportioned with large eyes. Heavy cream phenocrysts. Ex-Gary Cuckler, Oliver Skrivanie, Steve Fuller, Earl Townsend, Richard Meyer, Judge Edward Payne and Leslie Hills. Meyer acquired at the Payne Sale on August 15, 1935. Pictured in the Color Plates of Birdstones of the North American Indian (Color Plate X and 381-1). Also pictured in St. Louis Prehistoric Art (1953. pp58-59), 2009 Prehistoric American Birdstone Issue (pp75, 173), Indian Relics and their Values (1942, p61), 1959 #4 CSAJ (pp152-153), Legends I (p40), Legends II (p130, 202) and several other places. The front ridge has a small spot of repair. A highly developed and documented Birdstone. One of the best of its type. Featured on the cover of this auction's catalog
