Grouping of British Officers Equipment Attributed to Military Cross Winner 2nd Lieutenant L E Lewis Machine Gun Corps, consisting of Mk VIII Verners compass dated 1917 and housed in the original brown leather Sam Browne case with inked name, “L E Lewis”; French made officers binoculars with broad arrow stamp; leather covered glass spirit flask with aluminium cup; framed and glazed HQ Second Army certificate congratulating L E Lewis on the award of the Military Cross 21st Oct 1918. All remain generally good condition. The award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette 23rd March 1918 and citation was as follows, “2nd Lt Lewis Edmund Lewis, 30th Bn M.G. Co. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a battery of machine guns in the attack on Messines Ridge on 28th September, 1918. During a critical moment of the advance he engaged a hostile machine gun and crew coming into action, killing four, wounding one and taking one prisoner. His initiative and the reports he sent in about the progress of the advance were of great assistance”.
