WILLIAM BELL Grand Cañon of the Colorado River, Mouth of the Kanab Wash, Looking West, 1872, 10.6x7.75" ASG# WBC/024 Albumen print on original Survey Mount that is trimmed to 14x11.1" with the title printed on the mount board as well as credit W.B. Bell Phot No. 11.
William Bell (1830-1910) joined the U.S. Geological Survey of the West lead by Lieutenant George Wheeler for the 1872 season replacing Timothy O'Sullivan who was completing his last season with the Clarence King Survey. Bell had been working as a photographer with the American Medical Museum. Bell preferred dramatic vertical image making to show the immense vertical scale and depth of the narrow Grand Canyon views from the river.
