Circa 1890-1910. A natural ruby carved intaglio depicting a classical figure with an eagle at his side. Set in an entirely hand carved ring with a motto reading "Tra Vita Et Arte. (Between life and art.)The motto originated with Walter Pater-English critic, essayist, and humanist whose advocacy of "art for art's sake" became a cardinal doctrine of the movement known as Aestheticism.
