Description
Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Boy and Girl At Mailbox" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board.

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 15c Letter Writing stamps issued February 25, 1980.

Back on the playroom floor there are crayons, paper, scissors and glue strewn about as though mischievous elves have just been at work. Echoes of giggles and laughter still float about the room. All this because Grandma's birthday is on its way and some special little people want to say happy birthday. So, out come the coloring books, the note pad and the crayons. All morning they labor, chattering as they work and occasionally, in silence with tongues in fixed concentration on their lips and tiny frowns upon their brows, they color pictures and write the letters that will make their Grandma proud. Padding through the house, stopping to pet the dog and watch a bit of TV, they finally find Mom to help them address the envelope. Carefully holding the crayon, her hand wrapped tightly over theirs, they address the envelope and draw a pretty design on the flap, one that Grandma will be sure to love. Now it's time for the trip to the mailbox and Mom bundles them up for the walk to the box by the edge of the street. She watches from the window as they shuffle along, careful not to get their letter wet while laughing and playing, and stopping to admire the snowman they built last week. At the mailbox there's a discussion first, then one deposits the letter while the other lifts up the flag. Back home, they sit in the window until the mailman comes. They knock and wave, and he waves back as they giggle, happy their letter is on its way.
