Second half 19th century, 136 x 104 cm, Central Caucasus
This village rug from the Genje region – named "Elisabethpol Governorate" after its largest city at the time of production – has a light red field with a green-ground orduch medallion which contains three octagons, two diamonds and several blossoms. The wide white outline is decorated with stems. The central motif is flanked by eight small triangles. A row of geometric, stylised trees appears at each end of the field. Diamonds alternate with diagonal crosses in the narrow yellow border. – Signs of age and wear, both ends somewhat reduced, a number of sinuous areas in the foundation.
