Description
JASPER JOHNS
Scott Fagan Record.
Color lithograph from two stones and one phonograph record on Angoumois à la main paper die-cut by the artist, 1970. 410x400 mm; 16x15 inches (sheet), full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 13/20 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by ULAE, West Islip, with the blind stamp lower left recto. A very good impression of this extremely scarce lithograph. We have found only 5 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years.According to Field, "Johns' (born 1930) own record was used as a relief printing surface, quite literally an object 'recording' itself. Visual analogies to sound have occurred now and then in Johns' work, especially in the Voice paintings of 1964-65 and 1971, and in the [same-titled] lithograph of 1966-67." Field 131.
