Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1822 25/50c Capped Bust Quarter 25c Graded vf++ By USCG. Highlight of the Entire Auction. Up for Auction is one of the rarest coins Sandi and I have ever had the privilege to bring to auction. An 1822 Capped Bust Quarter 25/50c variety. A delightful mid grade example of this scarce and eagerly sought variety. Lightly to moderately toned surfaces exhibit the warmest patina around the peripheries, especially on the reverse. The strike is nicely centered on both sides, the devices suitably bold for the assigned grade with plenty of sharper detail remaining to the more protected elements of Liberty's portrait and the eagle's plumage. A few light marks on the obverse while present are not distracting and cannot be seen with the naked eye. An overall pleasing appearance is an uncommon and particularly desirable attribute in an early U.S. Mint silver coin that saw considerable circulation. This bold naked eye variety features a blundered reverse with the denomination 25 punched over an erroneous 50, with evidence of additional repunching to the primary digit 5 (25/5/50). Early quarter variety specialists and those who just desire to own something not everyone can are sure to compete vigorously for the honor of securing this aesthetically pleasing rarity. PCGS estimates only 42 survive in all grades with just 2 in mint state. PCGS has had 36 grading events of this numismatic rarity. Of those 9 are in higher grade than ours, but I assume that only amounts to 5 actual coins. Our example is likely the 5th or 6th finest known of an issue that only has 40 or so in existence. Trends for a coin such as this is difficult to determine and auction results are generally the best method. A vf35 in 2016 in an NGC holder sold for $21,738 and the 25/50 was not noted on the label. In 2017, a PCGS vf20, sold at Stacks Bowers auction for $22,325. There is currently a PCGS vf35 on sale at collectors corner for $35,000 by David Lawrence & company. The only other relevant auction sale is a vg10 that sold by Stacks Bowers in 2017 for $11,100. I have included pictures of the vg10 and the vf35. I wish you luck in obtaining this once in a lifetime coin. A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
