Rare 1858 "Cyrus W. Field" and Atlantic Cable Silk Ribbon
c. 1858, Commemorative Silk Ribbon, "Cyrus W. Field", To Commemorate the Successful Laying of the Atlantic Cable, Choice Near Mint.
This impressive special Silk Ribbon measures about 2.5" x 6" with black print on pale blue Silk. Its central vignette image shows a large world globe with "America" and "Europe" noted, displaying two hands shaking as they meet having connected by wire at the north pole. Text surounding the Map of the Globe reads: "Franklin. Morse. Hudson. Preedy." Below the globe is printed: "Sold by E.P. Whates 1. Barcly St. / Cyrus W. Field. / To commemorate the successful laying of the Atlantic cable at the bottom of the ocean uniting Europe with America Aug. 5th 1858. by the united exertions of the Officers and Crews of the British Steam Ship Agamemnon and the United States Steam Ship Niagara."
