Jack Kerouac's Signed Receipt for Mother's Wheelchair Rental, Retrieved from his Last Home
A medical equipment receipt signed and inscribed by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957), as "Pd Check #220 / JK / 6-18-67" near bottom. Dated June 3, 1967. Stamped verso with the Jack Kerouac Estate stamp. Expected wear including paper and corner folds. Else near fine. 5.5" x 8.5".
Kerouac rented a wheelchair for his mother, Gabrielle-Ange Lévesque Kerouac (1895-1973), who was left partly paralyzed following a stroke in 1966. The two-month-long rental from the "Lowell Medical Instrument Co." for the Metal-matic Wheel Chair (Minneapolis, Minnesota) "w/ Left Elevator" costing $15.00 was charged and paid in full two weeks later. Invoice number D 1318.
Jack, his third wife Stella, and Gabrielle lived at 271 Sanders Avenue in Lowell, Massachusetts between January 1967 and the summer of 1968. The single-family split-level ranch house had been built in 1962 and included three bedrooms. The Sanders Avenue address is listed as the customer's address at upper left. The images attached to this lot show Gabrielle seated in a wheelchair, possibly one rented from this same company. Stella was Gabrielle's primary caregiver before and after Jack's death in October 1969.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
