Description
Jack Kerouac's Personally Worn Modest Stainless Steel Rolex Wristwatch
A men's wristwatch personally owned by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957). Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual timepiece, ca. 1962, is made of stainless steel. The iconic Rolex logo--a five-pointed crown--is visible at the 12 o'clock position on the dial as well as on the crown, the adjustable knob at right. The dial is sleek and minimalist in design, with simple bar form hour marks. Fitted with hour, minute, and second hands and apparently in working condition. Emblazoned "Rolex / Oyster Perpetual" at the top of the dial and "OT / Swiss / TO" at bottom. The serial number 742618 dates this timepiece to no later than 1962 (it is engraved between the 6 o'clock lugs, visible only when the strap is removed.) The Hadley-Roma genuine leather strap is a later addition. The crystal and case back show expected wear consistent with careful custodianship but heavy use. The dial measures 1.25" wide or 31.75mm (excluding crown). The watch overall measures 9.5" long.
After Jack's death, the watch was lovingly worn by his brother-in-law John Sampas and John's son John Shen-Sampas, both executors of the Estate.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
