GORDON STUDIO ATTRACTIVE POSTERS ATTRACT NEW BUSINESS. Gouache maquette.
39x29 inches, 101x75 cm.
Condition B+: water staining and time-staining at edges; small tears, creases and flaking at edges. Painted on board.
A curious, but unabashed plagarized work after Ludwig Hohlwein's poster for Feima Ersatz coffee (circa 1925). The unknown designers at the Gordon Studio even sign their company name in a style similar to Hohlwein's signature. The text and the concentric rings of color are their own addition. One could charitably speculate that in the days prior to mass media, co-opting another designer's idea would probably have been easier to get away with than under modern day circumstances.
