This is one of the celebrated Bennett aquatints of American cities. Bennett, an English artist who came to America in 1816, executed a series of more than twenty fine aquatints from drawings by himself and others. These have been called "perhaps the finest collection of folio views of American cities in existence." In an old 1837 advertisement this print and its companion are offered by a New York dealer at $5 each, the top price in his list of American scenes.
