There is some degree of retouching in all parts of the painting; both old and more recent. There is retouching on most parts of the figure and the background, which shows a fluorescing varnish. The retouching in competently done. The canvas is relined with a wax relining. There are four pushed-in areas, the marks of the corners of another frame against the canvas; the work had been in long term storage with other framed works. The two lower areas are the most severe with several thin scratches on the bed and through the ankles. There is a second scratch above the head, near the edge, and a thin vertical scratch from the head to the wing, with some paint loss on the lower wing. All of this is associated with another frame being leaned against the canvas
