JFK Collection of Over 40 First Day of Issue Stamp Presentations and Photos
KENNEDY, JOHN F. Archive consisting of 43 mostly black and white 8" x 10" photographs, 33 of them presenting First Day of Issue stamps postmarked 1964 – 1968.
Soon after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, the United States Post Office decided to create a postage stamp to be issued on Kennedy’s next birthday. This 5-cent memorial stamp was issued May 29, 1964, on what would have been his 47th birthday, with a first day of issue cancellation in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts.
The overall shape of the stamp is a horizontal rectangle of a size standard for the time. The design consists of two side-by-side squares, the left one with a depiction of the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame, the right one with a portrait of Kennedy. Framing the central design is a quotation from President Kennedy's 1961 Inaugural Address "And the glow from that fire can truly light the world," along with Kennedy's full name and the years of his birth and death. Jacqueline Kennedy was consulted on the proposal, choosing both the design and its color, a blue gray not unlike that used in the interior of Air Force One.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
