Item Details
Description
Summicron-R 1:2/50 Leitz Wetzlar Camera Lens. Manufactured in the 1960s for use with the Leitz Leica Leicaflex Camera. Owned and used by Jacqueline Kennedy. In original felt-lined leather case.

After Jacqueline Bouvier was graduated from George Washington University, she started her first job in the fall of 1951 as the "Inquiring Camera Girl" for the Washington Times-Herald newspaper. Roving around the city, she took pictures of people she encountered, asked them questions on the issues of the day, and wove their answers into her newspaper column. She also covered the 1951 inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower and the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was during this time she met Massachusetts Congressman, soon to be U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy. The United Press headlined their June 25, 1953, story: "Senator Kennedy / Says He'll Wed / Ex-Camera Girl." Included with this lot are the original receipt from Sotheby's as well as several photographs of Jackie using cameras and photographs she took.
