Martin Morales (Mexican, b. 1951), folk art scene of Ocotlan, Oaxaca, 2002. Painted on board. Signed in white on lower left. "Ocotlan, Oax (Oaxaca) 7/31/02" handwritten on verso. A vibrant Mexican folk art painting created with the vivaciousness of the Oaxacan creative spirit. At th e center is the beautiful Santo Domingo church (Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman) - with worshippers dressed in colorful clothing facing the church as if about to enter. To either side are rows of trees and verdant farmland - with several farmers working the land and their animals. Beyond are charming red-roofed houses with hills in the distance and stylized trees forming silhouettes against the glowing sun-filled skies of aqua blue and gold with three hovering cloud formations, the central one featuring the sun above. Size: 15.75" W x 11.9" H (40 cm x 30.2 cm)
Oaxaca is known for its artistic traditions: charming hand-carved and painted wooden animal figures known as alebrijes, ceramics from Ocotlan (the site of this painting), and of course the works of masters such as Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo, and Rodolfo Morales.
