East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 1603 to 1868 CE. A finely preserved pair of waraji (sandals) that are formed from rough straw fibers woven around a central fibrous core. Six strap loops protrude around the peripheries of each sandal and are further wrapped with thin cloth that has been dyed a deep shade of blue. The front of each sandal has a double-looped foot strap wrapped in similar, undyed cloth as the strap loops. The undersides of the sandals are very nicely intact. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 8.9" L x 3.4" W (22.6 cm x 8.6 cm).
Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in March 2014; ex-private Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan collection

Condition
Minor fraying and losses to areas of some woven areas and blue/white cloth, with slight bending to overall forms of each sandal. Nice remaining color and preservation.
