Description
C. 100 BC, Iron Age. Bronze lunar amulet comprising a large loop, triangular body flanked by two rondels decorated with rounded projections. The body and the rondels each contain red enamel insets. The moon was an important symbol of life cycles in the Iron Age, as well as providing a way to calculate the passage of a year and the changing of the seasons. The wearer of a lunar amulet might have sought to make claims to this important knowledge within Iron Age society, claims which could lead to greater power and respect within his or her community. Good condition. Size: H:35mm / W:28mm ; 6.5g. Provenance: From an old British collection, acquired on the UK art market in the 1980s.
