Item Details
Description
Abraham Walkowitz, colored crayon on paper, 1913, Abraham Walkowitz (American, 1878-1965), Untitled Abstraction, signed and dated lower center, matted and framed under glass, 17"h x 10"w (sight), 26"h x 19"w (frame)

Provenance: The Arthur and Anita Kahn Collection

Notes/Literature: At the time this drawing was composed, Abraham Walkowitz was showing alongside John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, and Marsden Hartley at Alfred Stieglitz's avant-garde 291 Gallery. This was also the year of the ground-breaking 1913 Armory Show, introducing European Modernism to American collectors, and of which Walkowitz was both an organizer and participant. This work is of the earliest examples of pure abstraction in American art
