Description
Guido Llinas (1923 - 2005). Mixed Media on Cardboard 1990. Measure 20"in H x 15"in W and 30"in H x 25"in W with frame. Guido Llinas was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Self-taught, he appeared in the 1950s as a non-figurative and abstract painter strongly influenced by the rhythms of Afro-Cuban music. Juan A. Martinez, the expert on the artist, records Llinas travels in the United States as well as his exposure to abstract expressionism in New York City as well as Llinas incorporation of many of its elements in his own painting. Martinez also notes Llinas leading position in the Cuban Los Once Group in the first half of the 1950s. In 1963, Llinas moved to Paris where he perfected his printmaking as well as his style of action painting often using black and white pigments with a dense and rich texture. He exhibited his work widely with exhibitions in Cuba and throughout Europe. Martinez notes a major retrospective in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1989 and a second retrospective in Miami, Florida in 1997 with catalog essays by Martinez and Christoph Singler. Guido Llinas died in Havana, Cuba in 2005.
