His subjects of café scenes invoke Impressionism, while his colors and abstraction acknowledge the schools of post-Impressionism and Expressionism. Tarkay was born in Eastern Europe and survived WW II in a concentration camp for a year at a very young age. His family eventually emigrated to Israel.
