Rare Large Slave Collar with 15 links used to transport enslaved Africans from the Gold Coast (Ghana), West Africa, to the Caribbean and the Americas.

Rare large 19.5” x 3.5” neck collar, made from a thin sheet of metal that was hammered to form the collar. A 15-link chain is attached to a hook on the collar. Hooks are at the ends of the collar where they would be connected to tighten it around the African’s neck. The thin sheet of metal is consistent with the type of metals found in West Africa. Total length of collar and chain is 38".

Deaccessioned from a museum. From the letter of authenticity: “A three person shackle with this type of metal is documented in the publication ‘Captive Passage’ Page 53, published by the Smithsonian Institution Press in association with The Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia back in 2002. This is a very rare Slave Collar that documents the brutality of the slave trade while capturing Africans from their villages and transported these people to the slave castle in Ghana, West Africa to await for their voyage to the Caribbeans then to the Americas. This is to certify that the hammered slave collar accompanying this certificate is authentic as described, and was carefully researched through all available sources of information. This is a historical piece of World History that documents the African Slave Trade on the West Coast of Ghana during the early 1800’s…”
