Item Details
Description
Lincoln Abraham
Photograph of Abraham Lincoln in an oval frame, 7.5” x 9.5” (visible), 9.25” x 11”. Stamped on verso: “Herbert Georg Studio/ 301 West Carpenter/ Springfield, IL 62702.” Fine condition.

Made from one of two negatives discovered in 1952 by collector King Hostick who had Springfield photographer Herbert Georg make 11” x 14” and 8” x 10” prints from the original negatives.

This photograph was one of four poses taken on June 3, 1860, by Alexander Hesler in Springfield, Illinois, two weeks after Lincoln was nominated for President at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. They were well received by many, including Lincoln, who said of this and a side view photograph taken the same day, “That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases the people I am satisfied.”

Ex-King Hostick.
