Arlan Ettinger (American, b. 1944)

Bobby Short at The Carlyle, 1972.

Acrylic on canvas, signed lower left.

60" x 44"

Bobby Short, 1924 - 2005, was a much beloved cabaret singer and pianist, best known for his interpretations of songs by popular composers including Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, and George and Ira Gershwin.

For decades, Mr. Short's nightly appearances at New York City's Carlyle Hotel (75th Street and Madison Avenue) attracted erudite, savvy and appreciative audiences. Many record albums and videos resulted from Bobby's tenure at the stylish Hotel. (John F. Kennedy maintained a suite at The Carlyle.)

Artist and illustrator Arlan Ettinger was introduced to Mr. Short at Elaine's, the popular NYC bar and restaurant, where the notion of this stark image of Bobby Short performing at The Carlyle was conceived.
