Secretary of the Treasury Gifted 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar to David Powers President John Kennedy's Special Assistant
(JOHN F. KENNEDY). 1964 Half Dollar gifted by the Secretary of State, Douglas Dillon, to David Powers, former Special Assistant to President Kennedy and Curator of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum from 1964 to 1994.
Includes a heavily toned 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar, Gem Uncirculated and a March 24, 1964-Dated typed transmittal letter from Dillon on official, Secretary of the Treasury letterhead, 9" x 7," 1 page, Washington, DC, Extremely Fine. Dillon wrote to Powers, in full: "Dear Dave, I wanted you to have the Kennedy half dollar the day it became available. With best wishes, Sincerely, Douglas Dillon." Signed in blue ink by Dillon. Powers was very close to President Kennedy, having worked with him from the earliest days of the latter's entry into politics. Dillon knew of the affinity between the two men and sent this coin as a special gift. Includes the original transmittal envelope and a Certificate of Authenticity from John McInnis Auctioneers, who handled Powers' estate. Also, accompanied by two other Kennedy Half Dollars from Powers' estate - one encased in acrylic and another a polished, gilt edition in a collector case. Pedigree: Sold by John McInnis Auctions, February 17, 2013, Lot 523, where it hammered at $900. (with lot image and description printout from that sale). (6 items).
David Francis Powers (April 25, 1912 - March 28, 1998) was Special Assistant and assistant Appointments Secretary to President of the United States John F. Kennedy. Powers served as Museum Curator of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum from 1964 until his retirement in May 1994. Powers was a military veteran who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Powers was also a close friend of Kennedy.
