Description
Ferrucio Polacco (Argentinian, 1917-2012) Untitled, 1961 Wood, marble 36 x 25-3/4 x 20-3/4 inches (91.4 x 65.4 x 52.7 cm) (including base) Incised Polacco, 1961 The Italian-Argentinian sculptor, Ferruccio Polacco, was born in Ferrera, Italy, in 1917. Although he attended the University of Padua for Political Science, he became an established self-taught sculptor. Polacco lived in Venice until he immigrated to Argentina in 1940, where he co-founded the Argentine Association of Sculptor Artists. In collaboration with the Museo de Arte Moderna di Buenos Aires, an exhibition titled "Sculture di Ferruccio Polacco" - which featured the present lot "Figura Sdriata/Reclining Figure" - was held at the Comune Di Venezia at the Galleria Bevilacqua La Masa in Piazza San Marco, Venice, from August 27 to September 9, 1960. These two sculptures, Figura Sdriata ( Reclining Figure), 1960 and Untitled, 1961, reveal his dominant style with a penchant for figuration that leans towards abstraction. His focus on the human form and dexterity with materials mutually give life to the sculptures' physicality. Polacco received many awards, including the Trabucco Prize from the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes, in Argentina. He participated in numerous exhibitions at the National and Provincial Salons of the Argentine Republic since 1955; the Open Air Exhibition of the Botanical Garden organized by the Secretaria de Cultura de la Municipalidad de la Ciuda de Buenos Aires (1957) and the Exposicion de Arte Moderno Rioplatense organized by the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires (1959), among others. His work is included in the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art. Later in his life he devoted his work to large-scale outdoor public installations.
