Per PCGS Only 200 Survice In Unc; Tied for 5th finest known Up for auction is the elusive 1844 RPD fs-301. Secondary remnants of earlier date punches are evident above the 1 and below the 8 and first 4. This variety is always popular among Seated Liberty specialists. Kam Ahwash presents a short discussion and a photograph of the 1844 Repunched Date in a November 1977 Gobrecht Journal article titled "Some Oddities in the Half Dime Series." This variety is considered scarce (Blythe, 1992), but there is some controversy about how scarce. To date PCGS has only ever certified 10 examples, several of which are likely resubmits. The current Premium Select Uncirculated offering stands out as ttied for 5th finest specimen known. Lustrous surfaces exhibit well-struck design elements.
