Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a graphite and watercolor illustration on paper, done in the avant-garde style of Joseph Csaky (Hungarian, 1888-1971). A graphite inscription at lower left reads, "Csaky". This modernist image is a careful composition of geometric shapes, soft pastel colors, and delicately intersecting lines. A cheerful and dynamic addition to any collection. Unframed piece measures approximately 11.75" x 8.25".

Reverse side of piece features a stamp which reads, "379", as well as a handwritten inscription at top right, with an illegible signature and the date "1953". At left, a circled graphite inscription reads, "Csaky", with an additional ink inscription which is largely illegible to this author.

Joseph Csaky (Hungarian, 1888-1971) was an avant-garde artist, sculptor, and graphic artist closely associated with the Cubist art movement. At the turn of the 20th century, Csaky was an active member of the Section d'Or, helping to push art into the realm of Art Deco. Csaky pioneered Cubism in sculpture, and is remembered today as being one of the great nonrepresentational artists of his time.
