Description
1881 Practice of Medicine Treatise Bartholow Disease Pathology Therapy Malaria

Roberts Bartholow was a soldier, doctor, and professor who was the first to apply electrodes to the human cortex, using his servant girl who had cancer and later died from a seizure. Although Bartholow was criticized for his experimentation by the American Medical Association, he did not suffer professionally and was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

One of Bartholow’s most successful works was ‘A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine.’ It is a compendium of instruction on the pathology, symptomology, and treatment of different diseases to be used and studied by students and doctors in partial hope to stem the rise of ‘therapeutic nihilism.’ Bartholow’s compendium includes diseases of the digestive system, esophagus, pancreas, liver, heart, nervous system, spinal cord, brain, as well as malaria, diabetes, cholera, and more!

This 1881 edition of Bartholow’s ‘A Treatise on the Practice of Medicine’ includes 46 wood engravings to illustrated different diseases!
