Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th century CE. A finely painted retablo on heavy gauge tin depicting a crowned/haloed St. Joseph (San Jose) standing in flowing vestments of green, gold, and red hues, tenderly cradling the infant Jesus, who is dressed in flowing red draperies, in his left arm and a prominent staff of lilies in his right hand, while Jesus holds a cross in his left hand, representing his Christian dominion, and the three nails of the Cross (foreshadowing the Crucifixion) in his left. Both are set before a lovely landscape of trees and big sky, as holy light rays radiate from their visages. This composition is set in a carefully worked tin nicho featuring beautiful rosettes highlighting the corners and pediment of the intricately detailed frame. Condition
Retablo shows expected surface wear, minor pigment loss, two perforations at top center for former suspension, some bending, and areas of oxidation. The nicho, most likely created later than the ex-voto, shows some oxidation and tarnish.
