Description
[Rev. David Harlan SANFORD (1801-1875, of Medway, Mass.)]
A collection of 8 manuscript sermons in ink. Medway, Mass: May 17 – Dec 27 1868. 8 separate sermons, a total of approximately 220 pages, most in small quarto format wove paper, but also including some inserted smaller-format scraps (including a partial letter, signed, from his son-in-law, Rev. Calvin Cutler). Stitched. Condition: some toning, otherwise excellent.
An interesting selection, all eight sermons are numbered and dated and hint at the Rev. Sanford’s prodigious output. He notes where they were first preached, but then adds notes if he reused the sermon on a later occasion in a different location. 1. May 17 1868, #1930; 2. June 14 1868, #1931; July 5 1868, #1933; July 5 1868 #1934; Oct 18 1868, #1940; Nov 22 1868 #1950; Dec 20 1868 #1953.
After his death a quite substantial memorial biography was published. The author noted that all the Rev. Sanford’s ‘sermons are broken and unfinished, owing to his facility in extemporizing; yet they show marvelous industry, when we realize that they were written sermons of from twenty to thirty closely penned pages, and number over twenty-five hundred.” (W.M. Cornell Memoir of Rev. David Sanford [Middleboro, Mass., 1878], p.44. See Mass. Hist Society. Cutler Family Papers, call # Ms. N-175.
